IV Sedation

Women Relaxed in Dentist Chair at Cameo Dental SpecialistsYour oral health is important. When oral health issues arise, getting treatment right away is crucial. However, if the idea of stepping foot inside a dental office or sitting down in a dental chair makes you feel anxious or uneasy, you may try to avoid getting care at all costs. Ignoring the need for dental treatment does not make the issue go away. In most cases, once an issue has developed, it only continues to get worse. At Cameo Dental Specialists, we can help to alleviate your anxiety, allowing you to get the treatment you need with IV sedation.

Reasons For Sedation

Sedation is used to help you relax and feel more comfortable in the dental chair while we perform your necessary procedures safely and effectively. It is commonly used to help patients who experience fear or anxiety when it comes to undergoing any type of dental care. It can also be used in other situations such as:
•  Low pain threshold.
•  Sensitive gag reflex.
•  Your teeth are very sensitive.
•  You have trouble sitting still.
•  You need several procedures at once or your treatment will take a long time.

What Is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is a type of sedation that involves delivering the sedative medication directly into your bloodstream through a needle. The needle, which is attached to IV fluids, is inserted either into the back of your hand or your arm. Once we are ready to begin your treatment, the medication is administered into the IV fluids, where it travels directly into your bloodstream. IV sedatives take effect almost immediately, and you feel almost instantly relaxed and comfortable. This type of sedation makes you feel drowsy, although you are still conscious. Many patients report temporary amnesia, where they are unable to recall parts, or any, of their procedure.

Benefits Of IV Sedation

IV sedation provides several benefits.
•  Sedation takes effect almost immediately.
•  You feel almost instantly relaxed and calm.
•  We can provide you treatment in a safe, effective way.
•  Your IV sedation can be adjusted as needed throughout your treatment.

Is IV Sedation Safe?

IV sedation is considered to be both very safe and very effective. Before undergoing treatment, you are provided with instructions that need to be followed. These instructions direct you to avoid eating or drinking anything, including water, at least 6 to 8 hours before your appointment. However, if you take certain medications, you should continue to take them as directed. In this case, a small amount of water is permitted to help you swallow your medication. Following these instructions is important for ensuring your safety during treatment. If they are not followed, you may need to be rescheduled.

Throughout the duration of your treatment, your vitals are monitored by a trained professional. We can easily and quickly adjust your sedation as needed as your treatment is performed. After the completion of your procedure, the needle is removed. You remain in the office for a set period, which allows us to monitor you for a while. Because the effects of IV sedation can linger for several hours, you will need to have someone to drive you home.

If the idea of undergoing dental treatment makes you feel uneasy or nervous, such as a root canal treatment or dental implant, IV sedation can help you to feel more relaxed and comfortable.
