![]() While it is understandable for a person to stop listening because they are overwhelmed by the thought of surgery, it is important for them to learn about the side effects they may face after the surgery for oral cancer. The Minor Side Effects There are two types of side effects to know about after surgery. Those are minor issues and major issues. Minor side effects are things that you can treat on your own and are fairly common. The most common side effect after oral surgery is pain. Treatment for minor pain can include hot or cold compresses and over the counter pain medications. Swelling is another common issue after surgery and will usually subside within a short amount of time. Some people experience minor bleeding from the surgical site. Depending on the type of anesthesia used for the surgery, side effects include tiredness, diarrhea and constipation. There are over the counter medications that can help with these issues. Severe Side Effects While it is possible to deal with the minor side effects through home remedies, there are more severe side effects that require extra help. One of the most common side effects is excessive bleeding. A little bleeding that does not last long is a minor problem, but if there is a lot of blood or it does not stop within 24 hours, it is better to seek help. The same is true for pain. Minor discomfort and pain can last for a few days, but excessive pain or pain that does not go away at all are signs of a possible problem. If you experience these issues or other symptoms, including fever, difficulty breathing or trouble eating and drinking, it is best to seek out help from our office. Contact our office to schedule an appointment to learn more about this or any other oral health issue. |
