You may have noticed some small areas that are noticeably whiter than what your teeth normally are. No amount of hard, forceful brushing will take it away, and in some cases, makes it more noticeable than ever before.

There are quite a lot of reasons for this. If these spots are present since you were a small child, then that is actually the effect of having too much fluoride when you brush your teeth.

If it is more recent, then there are quite a lot more things you may want to look at. Depending on the cause, you may need to get a different toothpaste or have to improve your dental health.

What are the Causes of Those White Spots?

For those that have been with you through your childhood, that is due to having the enamel, the protective layer on the surface of your teeth, be damaged due to exposure to too much fluoride.

Now, toothpastes are not using much fluoride compared to 10 to 20 years ago, and the younger generation should have lesser instances of this white spot. We call it hyperfluorosis, and it can be removed through a professional tooth whitening. Another way to take care of this is to have dental veneers so that the color of your teeth will be uniform.

For those who have just noticed the tiny white spots and did not have them years ago, that is actually a sign of tooth decay. This is because the bacteria found in your tiny white spot are secreting acidic substances, which makes that spot whiter.

Another reason could be the buildup of plaque. For both of those causes, having better dental health is necessary. You would need to get some dental cleaning for this plaque buildup.

The earlier you take care of the white spots, the better your dental health and your appearance. If you do have problems with any dental concerns, schedule an appointment with us and let us help you.
