When Do You Need to Bring Up Ear Aches During One of Your Visits to Our Office? An earache can mean several things such as an infection from a virus. When do you need to bring us earaches during one of your visits to our office will depend on the duration and severity of the pain.

If you or your child were cleared from an infection due to a virus, then it may be time to schedule a visit to our office.

Earaches and TMD

Ringing or pain in the ears could be the result of a typical oral condition, temporomandibular disorder or TMD (sometimes, incorrectly called TMJ). The temporomandibular joint is the one that connects the jaw to the skull, and allows you to open and move your mouth thousands of times during a day. Earaches are one of many symptoms that may appear, with a TMD.

One of the most common TMDs is bruxism, or the unconscious grinding and clenching of the teeth. In general, this happens at night and can disturb you and your partner's sleep. There are many reasons why you should get a potential TMD diagnosed by one of our doctors. The most important one is that it can be as easy as using a mouth guard to sleep, which can help relax your jaw.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, initial results on TMD identified physiological, psychological, sensory, genetic, and nervous system factors that increase the risk of developing the syndrome. These results also indicate that women are at higher risk of developing TMD. Moreover, women may deal with pain from an earache related to this condition differently than men.

An unexplained earache that is not related to an infection can mean an oral problem that can be successfully treated by our doctors and it could be time to bring it up during one of your visits to our office. Being in pain on a regular basis affects your quality of life so if you suspect your earache is related to a TMD please don't hesitate to call us for a consultation.
